One of the things I loved most about traveling through the Balkans was the hospitality. It’s part of the culture. During my time in Albania, North Macedonia, and several other Balkan countries, I was welcomed with kindness and often found locals looking out for me as a solo female traveler.

Yes! Overall, the Balkans is one of the safest regions I’ve traveled through as a solo female traveler. While every destination requires common-sense precautions, I felt safe exploring cities, taking public transport, and meeting locals across much of the region. It’s one of the areas I recommend most often to women planning their first solo trip in Europe.
During my trip, I felt comfortable exploring cities like Berat, Gjirokastër, and Shkodër in Albania, Prizren in Kosovo, Skopje in North Macedonia, Kotor in Montenegro, and Dubrovnik in Croatia on my own. I also met many other solo female travelers who had positive experiences exploring the Balkans.

This trip gave me so much more than beautiful photos. I explored charming old towns, hiked through beautiful mountains, swam in crystal-clear water, ate amazing local food, and met some of the friendliest people I’ve come across while traveling.
One thing I loved was how different each country felt. Even though they’re all part of the Balkans, every border brought a new culture, new traditions, and new experiences. Yet one thing stayed the same everywhere I went: people were welcoming and happy to help.
The Balkans are also one of the few places in Europe where you can still travel on a reasonable budget without feeling like you’re missing out. For me, it was the perfect mix of adventure, culture, nature, and affordability.
