8-Day Albania Solo Travel Itinerary (2026)

Day 1: Arrive in Tirana

Welcome to Albania! If it’s your first time in Albania, Tirana is the perfect place to get familiar with the country’s relaxed atmosphere before continuing your adventure.

Instead of rushing straight to your next destination, spend the day exploring the Albanian capital. Tirana has transformed into one of the Balkans’ coolest cities, with colorful buildings, trendy cafés, lively markets, and a growing food scene.

One of my favorite parts of Tirana was simply sitting outside with a coffee and watching everyday life unfold. The city has a relaxed atmosphere that makes it easy to settle into solo travel.

Things to do:

  • ☕ Explore Blloku

  • 🏛️ Visit Skanderbeg Square

  • 🎨 Discover Bunk’Art

  • 🌳 Walk through the Grand Park

  • 🍝 Enjoy your first Albanian dinner

Tirana is one of the easiest cities in the Balkans to explore alone. Don’t be afraid to enjoy dinner by yourself. Outdoor terraces are part of the local culture.

Stay: Tirana (1 night)

Tip 1: If you have 9 or 10 days in Albania, spend an extra night in Tirana and add a day trip to Lake Bovilla before continuing your itinerary. It’s the perfect introduction to Albania’s stunning landscapes.

Tip 2: I compare accommodation on Booking.com, but if you’re looking to meet other solo travelers in Tirana, Hostelworld is a great option.

Day 2: Discover Berat

Travel time: Around 2–2.5 hours by bus

Known as the City of a Thousand Windows, Berat is one of Albania’s most beautiful towns.

Its white Ottoman houses climb the hillside beneath an impressive castle, creating one of the country’s most iconic views.

Spend the day wandering the narrow cobblestone streets, discovering local shops, and enjoying the slower pace of life.

Things to do:

  • 🏰 Berat Castle

  • 🪟 Mangalem Quarter

  • 🌅 Sunset overlooking the river

Stay: Berat (1 night)

Tip: If you’re short on time, you can also book a walking tour or food tour through GetYourGuide.

Day 3: Step Back in Time in Gjirokastër

Travel time: Around 3 hours by bus

Another UNESCO World Heritage Site, Gjirokastër is famous for its stone houses, steep streets, and hilltop castle.

Walking through the old town feels like stepping into another century.

It’s also one of my favorite places to wander without an itinerary.

Things to do:

  • 🏰 Explore Gjirokastër Castle

  • 🛍️ Browse the Old Bazaar

  • ☕ Relax at a café with mountain views

Stay: Gjirokastër (1 night)

Tip: Wear comfortable shoes. The streets are steep, uneven, and can be slippery. And guided walking tours on Viator are a great way to learn about the city’s Ottoman history.

Day 4: Head North to Shkodër

Today is your longest travel day, but it’s worth it. Shkodër is also where many travelers begin their adventure into the Albanian Alps, making it an essential stop on almost every Albania travel route.

The city has a youthful atmosphere, great  cafés, and is the gateway to the Albanian Alps.

Spend your afternoon walking around the city or renting a bicycle to explore along the lake.

Things to do:

  • 🚲 Cycle around town

  • 🏰 Rozafa Castle

  • ☕ Coffee at a local café

Tomorrow you’ll leave early for one of the most scenic ferry rides in Europe.

Stay: Shkodër (1 night)

Tip: Buy snacks for tomorrow’s journey

Day 5: Cruise Across Komani Lake & Arrive in Valbonë

Today starts early, but I promise it’s worth setting your alarm.

From Shkodër, you’ll take an early transfer to Komani Lake, where you board the ferry to Fierza before continuing to Valbonë. The ferry across Komani Lake is often described as one of Europe’s most scenic boat trips, and after experiencing it myself, I understand why. Surrounded by emerald-green water, beautiful cliffs, and untouched nature, it reminded me of some boat rides I took in Thailand. It’s one of those journeys where you’ll want to keep your camera close because the views just keep getting better.

Once you arrive in Valbonë, check into a family-run guesthouse and spend the afternoon relaxing before tomorrow’s hike.

Today’s Highlights:

  • 🚢 Cruise across Komani Lake

  • 🏔️ Enjoy your first views of the Albanian Alps

  • 🌅 Watch the sunset over the mountains

Stay: Valbonë (1 night)

Tip: Guesthouses in Valbonë are social. Dinner is served family-style, making it easy to talk with other hikers before tomorrow’s adventure.

Day 6: Hike from Valbonë to Theth

Today’s hike is the highlight of this itinerary. The Valbonë–Theth trail is one of Europe’s most iconic day hikes, taking you through alpine meadows, over mountain passes, and past incredible panoramic views. Most guesthouses are located in Valbonë village, about 3–6 km (1.9–3.7 miles) from the official trailhead in Rragam, so ask your accommodation about a shuttle before starting. It lets you start the hike fresh for the more challenging mountain section.

You’ll find the key hiking details in the table below.

Although it’s physically demanding, you don’t need to be an experienced hiker. A reasonable level of fitness and proper hiking shoes are enough.

Hiking Essentials

  • 🥾 Comfortable hiking boots

  • 💧 At least 2 liters of water

  • 🥪 Snacks or a packed lunch

  • 🧥 Light rain jacket

  • ☀️ Sunscreen

  • 📱 Offline maps downloaded

Stay: Theth (1 night)

Tip: Before tackling the Valbonë–Theth hike, I recommend having reliable travel insurance. I never hike abroad without it.

Day 7: Slow Down and Explore Theth

After yesterday’s hike, give yourself permission to slow down.

One of the biggest mistakes travelers make is rushing back to Tirana immediately after arriving in Theth. Spending an extra day here lets you experience one of Albania’s most beautiful regions without watching the clock.

Theth is peaceful, surrounded by dramatic mountain peaks, and feels like a completely different world from Albania’s cities.

I planned to leave the same day I arrived in Theth. I thought I’d just recover quickly after the hike and continue my journey. But after finishing the Valbonë–Theth trail, I was exhausted and didn’t want to hurry.

I met two other hikers I had crossed paths with during the hike and they convinced me to stay one more night instead of rushing back to Tirana. I’m so glad I listened to them and we had dinner together in their guesthouse.

Things to do:

  • 💦 Visit the Blue Eye of Theth

  • 🌊 Walk to Grunas Waterfall

  • ⛪ See the famous Theth Church

  • 🏡 Visit the Lock-in Tower

  • ☕ Relax with mountain views and a good coffee

Stay: Theth (2nd night)

My Tip: If the weather is nice, don’t overplan this day. Sometimes slowing down is the best part of traveling.

Day 8: Return to Tirana

It’s time to head back to Tirana.

The drive is long, so leave early if you’re catching a flight the same day. If your schedule allows, consider spending one final night in Tirana before flying home.

Looking back, Albania surprised me more than almost any destination in Europe. I came expecting mountains and low prices, but what stayed with me were the conversations, the hospitality, and the feeling of discovering a place that still feels authentic.
