A Realistic Greenland Budget: What Does Greenland Cost?
Planning a Greenland budget starts with understanding where your money goes: accommodation, food, transportation and activities.Β
Nobody travels to Greenland expecting it to be cheap. But understanding the Greenland travel cost before you go can make the difference between βbest trip everβ and βI need a second mortgage.βΒ
Price note: Prices are based on my Greenland trip and current research and can change depending on season, availability and exchange rates. Use these numbers as a realistic planning guide rather than fixed prices.Β
Here’s what you’re looking at:Β
Daily Budget Range
Budget Type | Daily Cost (EUR / USD) | What You Can Expect |
Budget | β¬140β185 / $164β217 | Hostel/guesthouse, self-catering, free activities + one paid activity |
Mid-range | β¬230β325 / $270β380 | Guesthouse, restaurant meals, transportation + activities |
Luxury | β¬370+ / $433+ | Hotels, eating out, premium activities |
These numbers include accommodation, food, local transport, and one activity per day.
For my Greenland travel budget, I would plan around β¬150β200 ($176β234) per person per day for a budget-conscious trip.
This excludes the cost of getting to Greenland and assumes you’re staying in budget accommodation, cooking some meals yourself, walking where possible and limiting expensive activities.Β
Getting to Greenland is your biggest expense.
Here’s what to expect:
Route | Cost (Return) | Best Time to Book |
Copenhagen to Nuuk | β¬400-600 / $430-650 | 3-6 months ahead |
Reykjavik to Nuuk | β¬500-700 / $540-760 | 3-6 months ahead |
From the US | β¬1,015+ / $1,100+ | 4-8 months ahead |
Tip: Book months ahead for summer travel. Capacity is limited and prices increase fast.
When looking for flights, I used Skyscanner to compare prices. The flexibility to search “whole month” saved me β¬200( $232,17)
Accommodation Cost
Budget Options
ποΈ Wild camping: Camping is a budget-friendly option in Greenland, but rules vary by location and protected areas can have additional restrictions. Always check the local rules before setting up your tent.
ποΈ Hostels/guesthouses: β¬46-74 / $50-80 per night in Nuuk, Ilulissat, and Sisimiut.
π Self-catering apartments: β¬46+ / $50+ per night β
You can find great deals on Booking.com for apartments with kitchens.
Tip: Want to skip the hassle of planning everything yourself? TourRadar offers all-in-one Greenland tours with accommodation, meals, guides, and activities includedβ¦ perfect if youβd rather relax and enjoy the scenery.
Food Costs: How to Eat Without Crying
Grocery Store Prices
Item | Cost |
Cucumber | β¬7 ($8) |
Bread | β¬4-6 ($4-6) |
Pasta | β¬3-5 ($3-5) |
Cheese | β¬7-11 ($8-12) |
Money-Saving Food Tips
- π Cook your meals: Hostels and Airbnbs have kitchens. Even cooking one meal a day saves a lot of money.
- π Shop at supermarkets: Pisiffik and Brugseni in big towns. In villages, Pilersuisoq is your only option (limited stock, higher prices).
- π Forage for berries: In late summer (July-September), the tundra offers free blueberries and crowberries.
- π« Pack lightweight staples: Nuts, protein bars, and noodles from home saved my budget. My suitcase was 80% snacks. π
- π§ Bring a reusable water bottle: Tap water is generally safe to drink, and Visit Greenland notes that flowing river water can also be suitable for drinking while hiking, although you should avoid closed or stagnant water sources. I brought my reusable water bottle which saved me from buying expensive plastic bottles.
Transport Costs: Getting from A to B
The challenge? There are no roads connecting towns in Greenland. None. Zero. Greenland’s towns are connected primarily by air and sea rather than roads. So, how do people get around? By sea or air.
Getting Between Towns:
Option | Cost | Pros | Cons |
Domestic Flights | β¬277-739+ ($300-800+) each way | Fast, reliable | Expensive, strict 20kg weight limit |
Local Boats | β¬46-185 ($50-200) | Cheaper than helicopters | Seasickness risk, weather-dependent |
Activities: Where Your Money Goes
Budget Activities (Free or Cheap)
- π₯Ύ Hiking: Free! Ilulissat has four marked trails including the World Heritage Trail.
- ποΈ Museums: Around β¬10 ($11). Worth it on rainy days (and there will be rainy days).
- πΏ Wildlife watching: Free with binoculars. I saw whales from the shore.
π΅ Kaffemik: A traditional Greenlandic open house where locals invite guests for coffee, cake, and conversation. Often free or low-cost. Plus, free cake!Β
Luxury Experiences Worth the Money
Activity | Cost | Is It Worth It? |
Boat Tour (2-3 hours) | β¬46-74 ($50-80) | Yes, seeing icebergs up close is magical |
Kayaking | β¬83-111 ($90-120) | Yes, beautiful but cold (bring warm clothes!) |
Dog Sledding | β¬139-231 ($150-250) | Yes, but only in winter when there’s snow |
Glacier Trekking | β¬185-369 ($200-400) | Yes, once in a lifetime experience |

I Wish I Knew This Before Visiting Greenland
πΈ Greenland is expensive: Groceries and restaurants cost a lot because almost everything is imported. Pack snacks to save money.
π€« The silence is unforgettable: No traffic, no city nois… just Arctic calm.
π± Expect limited internet: Download offline maps and enjoy disconnecting
ποΈ Towns are tiny: Outside Nuuk, most places are small villages with no roads connecting them.
βοΈ Pack light: Domestic flights often have a 20 kg baggage limit, so merino layers are important and I traveled with a hand luggage.

Mini FAQ: Solo Female Travel Greenland
Here are the most common questions about your solo trip to Greenland.
Is Greenland expensive to visit?
Yes, Greenland is an expensive destination, especially for accommodation, food and transportation between towns. But you can travel Greenland on a budget by staying in simple accommodation, cooking some of your own meals, limiting domestic flights and choosing free outdoor activities.
How Much Does Greenland Cost?Β
So, how much does Greenland cost? For a budget-conscious trip, I would plan around β¬150β200 ($176β234) per person per day, excluding international flights. This gives you roughly β¬1,050β1,400 ($1,229β1,638) for one week, depending on your accommodation, food, transportation and activities.
Can you travel to Greenland on a budget?
Yes, but Greenland is not a cheap backpacking destination. The best ways to save money are staying longer in fewer places, choosing accommodation with a kitchen, buying groceries, walking where possible and mixing free activities with a few paid experiences. Find tips on traveling on a budget on my travel solo and cheaper guide.
Where can I find cheap flights to Greenland?
Skyscanner is a useful place to compare flight prices and different routes to Greenland. Since flights to Greenland can be expensive, compare several dates and airports before booking.
Is Greenland safe for solo female travelers?
Yes, Greenland can be a great destination for solo female travelers, but the biggest risks are often related to the remote environment rather than typical city safety concerns. Check weather conditions, prepare properly for hikes and tell someone your plans before heading into remote areas. Find more on my solo travel and safety guide for Greenland.
Where can I find affordable accommodation in Greenland?
Booking.com is a good place to compare hotels, guesthouses and other accommodation options in Greenland. If you’re traveling on a budget, look for places with shared facilities, kitchens or breakfast included on Hostelworld.
Where can I find affordable Greenland tours?
TourRadar is a good option if you want an organised Greenland trip. You can compare group tours that may include accommodation, meals, guides and activities, which can be easier than organising everything yourself.
Where can I book day trips and activities in Greenland?
For individual experiences such as boat trips, sightseeing tours and other activities, you can check GetYourGuide or Viator. Booking one or two special experiences rather than a tour every day can help keep your Greenland budget under control.
Can you wild camp for free in Greenland?
Yes, wild camping can be a very budget-friendly option in Greenland, although you need to follow local rules and avoid restricted areas. In remote areas, you also need to take wilderness safety seriously, including the potential presence of polar bears.
Is Greenland suitable for vegetarians?
Yes, you can travel Greenland as a vegetarian in big towns such as Nuuk and Ilulissat. But vegetarian options can be more limited and fresh produce can be expensive, so staying somewhere with a kitchen makes things much easier and cheaper.
Do I need travel insurance for Greenland?
Yes, I recommend travel insurance for Greenland. The country is remote, transportation can be affected by weather and medical evacuation can be expensive.
Final Thoughts β Last Stop Before Takeoff!
Is Greenland worth the money? Yes, especially if you are looking for unique landscapes and experiences rather than a cheap holiday. Greenland’s icebergs, Arctic landscapes, hiking and remote towns make it a very different travel experience and you can reduce the cost by planning carefully.
So… can you visit Greenland on a budget? Yes, but it takes planning, flexibility, and a willingness to cook your own pasta.
When I tell people I visited Greenland without breaking the bank, they don’t believe me. But I did it. I stayed in hostels and planned my activities. And you know what? It was one of the best trips of my life. Greenland isn’t cheap, but it doesn’t have to ruin you financially.
Book early. Cook your meals. Skip the expensive tours, the free hikes are better anyway. Pack snacks from home.Β
My biggest takeaway from travelling Greenland is that you don’t always need to spend money to experience its magic. Some of the best moments are being outside, looking at the landscape and thinking, βHow is this real?β So yes, Greenland can hurt your wallet a little. But if you plan it properly, hopefully it won’t hurt that much. π
