Where Should You Go This Winter as a Solo Traveler?

Do you want snow, sunshine, Northern Lights or an adventure?

I chose these places based on safety, transport, solo-friendly activities and value for money.

Here are 10 destinations worth adding to your solo winter bucket list.

How I rate solo-friendliness: Based on getting around, finding accommodation, joining activities and meeting people solo.

1. Norway

Why does Norway belong on every solo travel bucket list?

If northern lights, snowy mountains and cute cabins are your idea of winter heaven, Norway is the right place to be.

Tromsø is one of the most popular places to see the Northern Lights, while the Lofoten Islands offer big mountains, fishing villages and Arctic landscapes.

Winter days are short, but that’s okay because you could spend the afternoon exploring and then spend the evening looking up at the sky hoping the aurora shows up.

When I was in Norway, I met a guy who had traveled to Tromsø seven times hoping to see the Northern Lights. He finally saw them on his seventh trip.  So yes, sometimes the aurora doesn’t show up. Nature has a sense of humor…

What can you do in Norway in winter?

    • 🌌 See the Northern Lights

    • 🐕 Go dog sledding

    • 🏔️ Explore snowy landscapes

    • 🐋 Go whale watching

    • ☕ Warm up in cozy cafés

    • 🏘️ Explore Tromsø and Lofoten

Why is Japan one of the best winter destinations for solo travelers?

3. Finland

Why should you visit Finland solo in winter?

Finland looks like someone designed a winter postcard and then forgot to turn the saturation down.

Lapland is the place to go for snowy forests, reindeer, husky rides and Northern Lights. Rovaniemi is also famous as the official hometown of Santa Claus.

Yes, it is touristy… Yes, you might still want the photo.

What can you do in Finland in winter?

    • 🌌 Hunt for the Northern Lights

    • 🐕 Go husky sledding

4. Iceland

Why is Iceland great for solo winter travel?

Iceland gives you glaciers, waterfalls, volcanoes, black-sand beaches and hot springs… all within a small country.

Reykjavík is easy to explore alone, and there are many group tours if you don’t want to drive in winter.

This is useful because Icelandic weather changes quickly.

What can you do in Iceland in winter?

    • 🌌 Search for the Northern Lights

    • 💦 Visit frozen waterfalls

    • 🌋 Explore volcanic landscapes

    • ♨️ Swim in hot springs

Tip: If you aren’t comfortable driving on icy roads, base yourself in Reykjavík and join organized day trips with Getyourguide or Viator instead.

5. Madeira, Portugal

Why is Madeira one of the best winter destinations for solo travelers?

You want winter without freezing? Say hello to Madeira!

The Portuguese island has mild temperatures, big mountains, waterfalls and famous levada hiking trails. It’s one of my favorite options for solo travelers who want nature without Arctic temperatures.

You can hike during the day and enjoy a hot chocolate afterward. That’s balance. 😉

What can you do in Madeira in winter?

  • 🥾 Hike the levadas

  • ⛰️ Explore mountain viewpoints

  • 🌊 Visit waterfalls

  • 🌿 Explore lush valleys

  • 🏊 Swim in natural pools

  • 🌅 Watch the sunset

6. Oman

Why should you escape winter to Oman?

Oman is for anyone who looks at European winter and thinks, not for me please.

From November to March, temperatures are much more comfortable for exploring deserts, mountains and coastlines.

You can visit Muscat, explore Nizwa, swim in Wadi Shab and spend a night surrounded by the dunes of Wahiba Sands.

What I learned in Oman: Dress respectfully and be prepared to cover up when visiting religious or more conservative places. I covered my hair when needed, and it was a simple way to respect the local culture while traveling.

What can you do in Oman in winter?

  • 🏜️ Explore Wahiba Sands

  • 💦 Swim at Wadi Shab

  • 🏰 Visit Nizwa Fort

  • 🏔️ Explore Jebel Akhdar

  • 🌆 Explore Muscat

7. Morocco

Why is Morocco a great winter destination for solo travelers?

Morocco is one of the best choices if you want culture, food and sunshine without traveling halfway around the world.

Marrakech can be warm during the day, while the Atlas Mountains offer a completely different winter experience.

You can wander through colorful souks, eat tagine, visit ancient cities and even head into the Sahara.

Be ready to negotiate if you’re shopping in the markets. Haggling is part of the experience, so don’t be afraid to politely negotiate the price. And if you get the chance to try a traditional hammam, do it. I came out feeling like a new person.

What can you do in Morocco in winter?

    • 🕌 Explore Marrakech

    • 🏜️ Visit the Sahara

    • 🏔️ Explore the Atlas Mountains

    • 🍲 Try Moroccan food

8. Canary Islands, Spain

Why are the Canary Islands perfect for winter solo travel?

If you want sunshine without leaving Europe, the Canary Islands are an easy choice.

Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura each offer something different, from volcanic landscapes and hiking to beaches and surfing.

You can also combine island time with remote work if you’re lucky enough to have a flexible schedule.

My experience: I visited the Canary Islands in December, and being able to escape the cold without traveling too far from Europe was absolutely worth it. If you’re based in Europe and want some winter sunshine without a long-haul flight, this is one of the easiest options.

What can you do in the Canary Islands in winter?

  • 🌋 Explore volcanic landscapes

  • 🥾 Go hiking

  • 🏖️ Relax on beaches

  • 🌊 Try surfing

  • 🌅 Watch sunsets

  • 🚗 Take a road trip

9. South Africa

Why should South Africa be on your winter travel list?

Winter in the Northern Hemisphere means summer in South Africa.

That makes December to February a great time for beaches, Cape Town, road trips and outdoor adventures.

You can combine city life, mountains, wildlife and coastline in one trip.

What can you do in South Africa?

  • 🦁 Go on safari

  • 🏔️ Hike Table Mountain

  • 🌊 Explore the Garden Route

  • 🍷 Visit the Cape Winelands

  • 🐧 See penguins at Boulders Beach

  • 🌅 Explore Cape Town

10. Argentina

Why is Argentina one of the best winter destinations for solo travelers?

Because Argentina gives you two different experiences depending on where you go.

If you want summer, head north to Buenos Aires and explore the city, food and nightlife.

If you want snow and mountains, Patagonia is waiting further south.

And if you’re anything like me, you’ll probably try to squeeze both into one trip.

What can you do in Argentina?

  • 💃 Explore Buenos Aires

  • 🥩 Try Argentine food

  • 🏔️ Hike in Patagonia

  • 🧊 See glaciers

  • 🍷 Explore Mendoza

  • 🌊 Visit dramatic lakes and mountains
