10 Destinations to Escape the Cold

If you’re looking for the best warm places to travel in winter, you’re in the right place. I’ve traveled solo to 67 countries across 7 continents, and escaping cold European winters with a bit of sunshine is always tempting, right?

Let’s find your next winter sun escape!

Daily budgets are approximate estimates for solo budget travel and exclude international flights. For 2027, these figures are based on current travel costs and expected price changes. Your actual costs will depend on accommodation, season, activities and travel style.

1. Canary Islands, Spain

Why visit the Canary Islands in winter?

If you want some sunshine without flying halfway around the world, the Canary Islands are an easy winter escape from Europe. It’s the universe’s way of saying, “Here, have some vitamin D without the jet lag.”

Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, and Lanzarote are all different. You can go for beaches and surfing, hike through volcanic landscapes, or spend a few days doing nothing (which after a long year of being productive is well-deserved!).

I visited the Canary Islands in December, and it was so nice to leave the cold behind without taking a long-haul flight. I enjoyed the beach, explored the island, and I remember thinking, Why don’t I do this every winter? My bank account had a few thoughts on that…ops!

What can you do in the Canary Islands?

  • 🌋 Explore volcanic landscapes

  • 🥾 Go hiking

  • 🏖️ Relax on the beach

  • 🌊 Try surfing

  • 🌅 Watch the sunset

  • 🚗 Take a road trip

Tip: Instead of picking just one island, fly into Tenerife or Gran Canaria (cheapest flights) and take the ferry to a quieter island like La Gomera or El Hierro for a few days

2. Oman

Why is Oman one of the best warm places to travel in winter?

If cold, grey winter days aren’t your thing, Oman is what you’re looking for. It’s the kind of place that makes you forget winter even exists.

From November to March, the weather is more comfortable for exploring the country’s deserts, mountains, wadis, and coastline. You can spend one day exploring Muscat, another swimming in Wadi Shab, and another waking up surrounded by the dunes of Wahiba Sands. And the landscapes? Beautiful!

What can you do in Oman?

  • 🏜️ Explore Wahiba Sands

  • 💦 Swim in Wadi Shab

  • 🏰 Visit Nizwa Fort

  • 🏔️ Explore the mountains

  • 🌆 Discover Muscat

  • 🌊 Visit the coast

What I learned in Oman: Dress respectfully, especially when visiting religious sites and more conservative areas. I covered my hair when needed, and it was an easy way to respect the local culture while traveling. It’s also a great reminder that being a respectful traveler is way cooler than being an ignorant one.

Oman can be warmer or cooler depending on where you go. Muscat is warmer than the mountains and inland areas.

Tip: Don’t miss the Daymaniyat Islands if you’re in Muscat. Go snorkeling and look out for turtles! I loved it and November to April is a great time to visit.

3. Morocco

Morocco is an easy winter escape from Europe if you want sunshine, good food, and a bit of adventure. It’s like stepping into a vibrant, sensory-rich painting.

Marrakech is warm during the day, while the Atlas Mountains give you a different side of the country. You can wander through the souks, shop for argan oil, eat a delicious tagine, explore old cities, or head to the Sahara.

And yes, don’t skip the hammam. I tried a traditional hammam in Morocco and came out feeling like a new person. I’m pretty sure I shed about five layers of skin and a few years of stress.

What can you do in Morocco?

  • 🕌 Explore Marrakech

  • 🏜️ Visit the Sahara

  • 🏔️ Explore the Atlas Mountains

  • 🍲 Try Moroccan food

  • 🧺 Wander through souks

  • 🧖🏾‍♀️ Experience a traditional hammam

4. Madeira, Portugal

Why should Madeira be on your winter sun list?

You want winter without freezing? Say hello to Madeira. It’s the perfect compromise for those who want to escape the cold but aren’t quite ready for tropical heat.

This Portuguese island is one of my favorite options when you want nature, hiking, and mild temperatures rather than tropical beach weather. It’s like a botanical garden that decided to become an island.

Madeira has beautiful mountains, waterfalls, green valleys, and famous levada trails to explore. You can spend the morning hiking, stop for lunch with a view, and finish the day watching the sunset. Not a bad winter day, right?

What can you do in Madeira?

  • 🥾 Hike the levadas

  • ⛰️ Visit mountain viewpoints

  • 🌊 Discover waterfalls

  • 🌿 Explore lush valleys

  • 🏊 Swim in natural pools

  • 🌅 Watch the sunset

5. Egypt

Why is Egypt a great winter escape?

Winter is one of the best times to visit Egypt. The days are warm, sunny, and more comfortable for exploring than the hot summer months. It’s the perfect time to channel your inner Indiana Jones without melting.

And you have many options. You can explore Cairo and the pyramids, cruise the Nile, visit ancient temples in Luxor, or head to the Red Sea for beaches and diving. You can combine history, sunshine, and adventure in one trip.

6. Thailand

Why visit Thailand in winter?

If warm beaches and sunny days are your thing, Thailand is the place to go. It’s the kind of place that makes you forget winter even exists.

December to February is one of the best times to visit many parts of the country with beaches, islands, temples, street food, and fun activities.

A popular route is Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and then a few days on one of Thailand’s islands with clear turquoise water. I combined beaches, culture, and mountains in one trip.

And don’t be surprised when an amazing meal costs around €2 ($2.20) … it’s one of the best parts of traveling in Thailand. Your stomach and your wallet will be happy.

What can you do in Thailand?

  • 🏝️ Island-hop

  • 🛕 Visit temples

  • 🍜 Eat street food

  • 🤿 Go snorkeling

7. Vietnam

Why should you consider Vietnam in winter?

Vietnam is a great choice if you want warm weather, delicious food, and a trip that can still be affordable. It’s a sensory overload in the best possible way.

Because Vietnam has different climates across the country, the weather can vary a lot depending on where you go. If you want sunshine and warmer temperatures, you’ll find it south in places like Ho Chi Minh City or Phu Quoc.

And then there’s the food. Pho, banh mi, fresh spring rolls, Vietnamese coffee… I could keep going. I’m getting hungry just writing about it… 😉

What can you do in Vietnam?

  • 🍜 Eat Vietnamese food

  • 🛵 Explore cities

  • 🏖️ Relax on beaches

  • 🚤 Take boat trips

  • 🌿 Explore the countryside

8. Mexico

Why is Mexico one of the best winter sun destinations?

Mexico gives you many ways to escape the cold. You can pick and choose what you want.

You can spend your winter on Caribbean beaches, explore Mexico City, visit colorful towns, or discover ancient Mayan ruins.

The Yucatán Peninsula is a great option for winter sunshine, with destinations such as Cancún, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum.

But Mexico has so much more to offer than just beaches. The food, culture, and history deserve just as much attention.

I experienced a mix of beaches, mountains, and culture during my trip, and the people were so open, friendly, and curious. And the food? I ate tacos and quesadillas almost every day, and I wasn’t complaining…

What can you do in Mexico?

  • 🏝️ Relax on Caribbean beaches

  • 🌮 Eat Mexican food

  • 🏛️ Visit ancient ruins

  • 🤿 Go snorkeling or diving

  • 🌴 Explore cenotes

9. Costa Rica

Why travel to Costa Rica in winter?

If your dream winter involves rainforests, beaches, volcanoes, and wildlife, Costa Rica belongs on your list.

December to April is the dry season, so it’s a great time to get outside and explore. You can hike through national parks in the morning and watch the sunset from the beach later that day.

Costa Rica is also a great choice if you prefer an active holiday over lying beside a pool for seven days.

What can you do in Costa Rica?

  • 🦥 Spot wildlife

  • 🌋 Visit volcanoes

  • 🥾 Hike through rainforests

  • 🏄🏾‍♀️ Go surfing

  • 🏖️ Relax on beaches

  • 🌊 Visit waterfalls

Tip: Don’t underestimate travel times. Costa Rica may look small on a map, but getting between destinations can take longer than expected.

10. United Arab Emirates

Why visit the UAE in winter?

If you want sunshine, warm temperatures, beaches, and city life, winter is a great time to visit the UAE. It’s a place where luxury meets the desert…

Dubai gets all the hype, but I preferred Abu Dhabi. Fewer tourists, more authentic, and calmer. The first time I ever heard about it was watching Sex and the City 2 when the girls went there. I remember thinking, I wanna go there myself. A couple of years later, I did. And it was even better than the movie made it look.

Winter temperatures are more comfortable for being outdoors, so you can explore the city, relax at the beach, or head into the desert. I did a quad bike tour in the desert and loved it, but one little warning: take it slow. We were going way too fast and ended up having an accident. Thankfully, no one was seriously hurt, but it reminded me not to underestimate the desert or the quads.

What can you do in the UAE?

  • 🏙️ Explore Dubai

  • 🏜️ Go on a desert safari

  • 🕌 Visit Abu Dhabi

  • 🏖️ Spend time at the beach

  • 🌅 Watch the sunset

  • 🍽️ Try different cuisines

How Much Does a Warm Winter Trip Cost?

Your budget depends on where you go, your accommodation, and how many activities you book.

But here are some general estimates:

  • Budget-Friendly (€30–€80 / $35–$94 per day):

  • Destinations like Vietnam or Thailand if you’re happy with hostels and street food. You can live like a queen on a peasant’s budget.

  • Mid-Range (€50–€120 / $59–$140 per day):

  • Countries like Morocco, Egypt, Madeira, the Canary Islands, or Mexico. This gets you nicer hotels and a few more meals in restaurants.

  • Higher-End (€80–€180+ / $94–$211+ per day):

  • Oman and the UAE, especially during peak winter months. Luxury comes at a price, but the experiences are worth it.

These estimates exclude international flights and can increase around Christmas and New Year.
