8-Day North Macedonia Solo Travel Itinerary (2026)
Day 1: Arrive in Skopje
Welcome to Skopje, the perfect place to begin your North Macedonia itinerary! If it’s your first time in the Balkans, Skopje is a great introduction. It’s a city where Ottoman history meets modern architecture, lively cafés, and big statues.
Instead of rushing to your next destination, spend your first day exploring the Macedonian capital. Wander through the Old Bazaar (Čaršija), one of the largest Ottoman bazaars in the Balkans, with its mosques, hammams, and craft shops.
One of my favourite moments was crossing the Stone Bridge at sunset, watching the Vardar River flow beneath me as the city lights started to glow. The Kale Fortress offers panoramic views over the city and is worth the climb.
My favorite moment: Sitting outside a bakery in the Old Bazaar with a warm burek and watching everyday life go by.
Things to do:
🛍️ Wander through the Old Bazaar (Čaršija)
- 🌉 Walk across the 15th-century Stone Bridge
- 🏰 Climb to Kale Fortress for city views
- ☕ Enjoy your first Macedonian coffee
- 🍝 Try traditional burek or ćevapi for dinner
Tip: The Old Bazaar is best explored in the late afternoon when the light is golden and the cafés come alive. I stayed in accommodation close to the Old Town, so I could easily walk everywhere. No need for taxis or public transport. I compare accommodation on Booking.com, but hostels in Skopje are also great for meeting other solo travelers.
Day 2: Matka Canyon & Relaxed Skopje Afternoon
Today you’ll escape the city and experience North Macedonia’s nature.
Travel time: Around 30-45 minutes to Matka Canyon with public transport.
Matka Canyon is one of my favourite places in North Macedonia. Just a short drive from Skopje, the canyon offers turquoise waters, towering cliffs, and monasteries.
Rent a kayak and paddle through the canyon’s waters. The Vrelo Cave is one of the deepest underwater caves in Europe and you can explore it by boat.
After a morning of adventure, head back to Skopje for a relaxed afternoon. This is the perfect time to slow down and enjoy Macedonian coffee culture. Find a café in the Old Bazaar or along the Vardar River and take time for yourself.
In the evening, treat yourself to a delicious Macedonian dinner. Try traditional dishes like tavče gravče (baked beans), ajvar (pepper spread), or grilled meats at a local restaurant.
My favorite moment: Paddling through Matka Canyon early in the morning before the crowds arrived.
Things to do:
🛶 Kayak through Matka Canyon
- 🕳️ Explore Vrelo Cave by boat
- ☕ Relax with coffee in the Old Bazaar or by the river
- 🍽️ Enjoy a traditional Macedonian dinner
Tip: Come to Matka early in the morning to avoid crowds and the heat. Kayak rental costs around €8 ($9 USD). Bring water and sunscreen.
Day 3: Discover Skopje's Soul
Spend your day discovering Skopje’s cultural and historical highlights.
Start your morning by visiting the Memorial House of Mother Teresa. It’s a peaceful little spot dedicated to Skopje’s most famous daughter, and it’s worth learning about her early life.
From there, visit the Macedonian National Museum if you’re curious about the country’s history. It’s enough to give you a sense of where this country has been.
When lunchtime comes, head to Debar Maalo. This leafy neighbourhood is where locals go to eat, drink, and hang out. Tree-lined streets, cosy restaurants, and a laid-back vibe. Get a table, order something delicious, and just watch the city go by… perfect for a solo traveler.
Later in the afternoon, take the funicular up Mount Vodno to see the Millennium Cross. It’s one of the largest crosses in the world. And the views over Skopje from up there? Beautiful ,especially during sunset.
Things to do:
🕊️ Visit the Mother Teresa Memorial House
- 🏛️ Explore the National Museum
- 🍽️ Lunch in Debar Maalo
- 🚠 Ride the funicular to the Millennium Cross
- 🌅 Sunset views over Skopje
Tip: The funicular runs regularly, but check the schedule so you don’t miss the sunset. And if you’re not a museum person, don’t worry. Skopje is great for just walking around and enjoying the atmosphere.
Day 4: Bitola—The City of Consuls
Travel time: Around 2–2.5 hours from Skopje to Bitola.
Today you’ll travel south to Bitola, North Macedonia’s second-largest city and one of its most elegant. Known as the “City of Consuls” for its diplomatic history, Bitola offers a perfect mix of Ottoman and European architecture.
Walk along Širok Sokak, the city’s main pedestrian street with colourful neoclassical buildings, cafés, and shops. This is the heart of Bitola and perfect for a coffee break.
Just outside the city, visit the ancient ruins of Heraclea Lyncestis, founded by Philip II of Macedon in the 4th century BC. The Roman mosaics here are some of the best-preserved in the Balkans, with detailed, beautiful designs that will leave you speechless.
Things to do:
🚶♀️ Walk around the Širok Sokak promenade
- 🏛️ Explore the ancient mosaics at Heraclea Lyncestis
- ☕ Enjoy a coffee in the city’s café culture
- 🏚️ See Ottoman and neoclassical architecture
- 🌙 Experience Bitola’s relaxed evening vibe
Tip: Walk to Heraclea from the centre in 25–30 minutes, or take a taxi. Visit the mosaics late in the day when the light brings out their colours beautifully.
Day 5: Explore Ohrid Old Town (UNESCO)
Travel time: Around 1.5 hours from Bitola to Ohrid.
Ohrid is North Macedonia’s crown jewel. This UNESCO World Heritage site, on the shores of one of the oldest lakes in the world, is one of the most beautiful spots in the Balkans.
Walk around the steep cobbled lanes of Ohrid’s Old Town, where every corner has something different like a chapel, a church, or a lake view. Visit the Church of Sveti Jovan (St. John at Kaneo), located on a cliff above the lake. It’s the country’s most photographed spot for good reason.
Climb to Samuel’s Fortress for panoramic views over the lake and the city. The Ancient Theatre, built in the Hellenistic period around 200 BCE, is another highlight, still used for summer performances.
My favorite moment: Grabbing a coffee by Lake Ohrid and simply sitting there for an hour, watching the boats and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere.
Today’s Highlights:
🚶♀️ Wander Ohrid’s charming cobbled streets
- ⛪ Visit the Church of St. John at Kaneo
- 🏰 Climb to Samuel’s Fortress
- 🏛️ Explore the Ancient Theatre
- 🌅 Watch the sunset over the lake
Tip: Wear good walking shoes. The cobbles are slippery and the streets are steep. Start your church visits early as many close in the afternoon.
Day 6: Ohrid & Sveti Naum (Day 2)
Travel time: 30–40 minutes along the lakeshore.
Today is all about exploring the wider Lake Ohrid area. The highlight? The Monastery of Sveti Naum, a 10th-century complex sitting peacefully near the Albanian border.
It’s located about 29 km south of Ohrid (about 18 miles). Here are your options:
By boat: Leaves at 10:00 AM, returns 6:00 PM. 90 mins each way. €20 (~$22 USD) round trip. Runs May–September.
By car/taxi: 30–40 mins. Taxi one way: €17 ~($19 USD).
By bus: Goes to Ljubanishte village, then a short walk. €4 (~$4.50 USD) round trip.
On your way back, stop at the Bay of Bones, a reconstruction of a prehistoric village built on wooden stilts over the lake. It’s a surreal sight and a peek into life between 1200 and 600 BCE.
End your day with a swim in the lake’s crystal-clear waters, or rent a kayak to explore the shoreline.
Today’s Highlights:
🛥️ Boat trip to Sveti Naum Monastery (or drive/bus)
- 🦚 Explore the monastery gardens and see the peacocks
- 🚤 Boat ride through the crystal-clear springs
- 🏚️ Visit the prehistoric Bay of Bones
- 🏊 Swim in the lake’s translucent waters
- 🛶 Rent a kayak or just relax by the shore
Tip: If you take the boat, enjoy the ride. It’s part of the experience! If you’re short on time, a taxi or rental car gives you more flexibility.
Day 7: Mavrovo National Park
Travel time: Around 2 hours from Ohrid to Mavrovo National Park.
End your trip in the mountains. Mavrovo National Park is North Macedonia’s largest wilderness area, with 731 km² of forests, lakes, and peaks over 2,500 metres.
Visit the traditional stone village of Galičnik, clinging to the mountainside at 1,560 metres. The village is famous for its traditional wedding festival every July, but outside that time, it’s a peaceful retreat with beautiful views.
See the submerged church in Mavrovo Lake. Its spire rises eerily from the water, a beautiful sight. If you have time, consider a short hike through the alpine scenery. The Medenica Peak (2,163 m) is accessible from Galičnik and offers spectacular views over the park.
Spend the night in a mountain hotel, enjoying the fresh air and starry skies.
Things to do:
🏞️ Explore Mavrovo National Park
- 🏡 Visit the mountain village of Galičnik
- ⛪ See the submerged church in Mavrovo Lake
- ⛰️ Short hike or scenic drive
- 🌲 Enjoy the alpine scenery
- 🛏️ Overnight in a mountain hotel
Tip: There are daily connections from Skopje and Ohrid to Mavrovo. Just check the schedule in advance as they’re less frequent than in the cities. In winter, check road conditions. Book your mountain hotel in advance, especially in summer.
Day 8: Fly Home
Travel time: 1.5–2 hours to the airport.
Wake up to fresh mountain air and enjoy one last coffee with a view. Say goodbye to the mountains and transfer to the airport for your flight home.
From Mavrovo to Ohrid Airport (OHD):
- Distance: ~96 km, about 1 hour 40 minutes
- Direct flights to: Milan, Vienna, Wroclaw, Katowice, Bratislava, and more
From Mavrovo to Skopje Airport (SKP):
- Distance: ~119 km, about 1 hour 50 minutes
- Direct flights to: Madrid, Barcelona, London, Paris, Istanbul, Dubai, Stockholm, Prague, and more
Things to do:
☕ Enjoy a final mountain coffee
- 🏔️ The last views of Mavrovo
- ✈️ Transfer to the airport
- 🌍 Fly home with beautiful memories
Tip: From Mavrovo, both airports are within easy reach about 1 hour 40 minutes to Ohrid or 1 hour 50 minutes to Skopje. Check which airport has better flight options for your destination. Skopje has more international connections, but Ohrid is growing and might have a direct route that works for you.
