Why These Places Are They're Perfect for Solo Travelers

I’ve visited all 10. My bank account is still recovering. But the experience ?Worth it. Some surprised me more than others, but each gave me that feeling of being somewhere different. Antarctica’s silence. Greenland’s icebergs. Kyrgyzstan’s mountain valleys. The Galápagos’ wildlife that has zero fear of humans. Bhutan’s monasteries on cliff edges. Oman’s endless dunes. Cape Verde’s volcanic peaks. They all have one thing in common… they’ll make you question everything you thought you knew about Earth.

My budget estimates are based on typical costs for accommodation, food, local transport and activities. Your actual costs will vary depending on your travel style and season.

1. Kyrgyzstan

If someone showed me a photo of Song-Kul Lake without telling me where it was, I’d probably guess another planet.

At 3,016 meters above sea level, Song-Kul is surrounded by mountains, green pastures, horses and traditional yurts. No skyscrapers. No shopping malls. Just mountains, silence and an incredible amount of space.

What Makes Kyrgyzstan Special?

  •  🏔️ Dramatic mountain landscapes

  • 🐎 Horse riding

  • ⛺ Staying in yurts

  • 🌌 Star-filled skies

  • 🥾 Hiking

  • 🧑🏾‍🌾 Nomadic culture

I traveled through Bishkek, Ala Archa, Chon-Kemin and Song-Kul. One of my favorite moments was reaching the high-altitude landscapes around Song-Kul and realizing just how big and quiet everything felt.

Tip: Song-Kul sits at 3,016 meters. If you’re not used to altitude, spend some night in Bishkek before heading up.

2. Argentina

Patagonia is hard to miss. It has glaciers, big mountains, turquoise lakes and huge open landscapes all in one place.

Perito Moreno Glacier is around 30 kilometers long, its ice wall rising above Lago Argentino. Then there’s El Chaltén, Argentina’s trekking capital.

Why Visit Patagonia?

  •  🏔️ Epic hiking

  • 🧊 Glaciers

  • 🐧 Wildlife

  • ⛰️ Mountain landscapes

  • 🚗 Road-trip adventures

Tip: The weather changes faster than your travel plans. Pack layers and I mean aaaall the layers.

3. Galápagos Islands

The Galápagos are a dream for wildlife lovers. Marine iguanas sit on volcanic rocks. Sea lions nap on beaches. Big tortoises wander like they have nowhere to be.

What Can You Do?

  •  🤿 Snorkel

  • 🐠 Dive

  • 🚣 Kayak

  • 🥾 Hike

  • 🐢 Wildlife watching

  • 🏝️ Island exploration

There’s a €170 (US$200) conservation entry fee, so this isn’t the cheapest destination. But if wildlife is your priority, it’s worth every euro/dollar.

4. Greenland

Greenland is one of those places that looks even more impressive in person than in photos. In Ilulissat, big  icebergs drift through the Ilulissat Icefjord. The glacier behind it moves 40 meters per day.

Then there are the colorful houses along the coastline. It looks unreal.

What to Experience?

5. Bhutan

Bhutan combines Himalayan landscapes, Buddhist monasteries, forested valleys and traditional architecture in a way that feels dreamlike.

The highlight is Tiger’s Nest Monastery (Paro Taktsang) , perched on a cliff.

Is Bhutan Expensive? It is. Most international visitors pay a €85 (US$100) Sustainable Development Fee per night. That makes Bhutan different from budget-friendly Nepal or Kyrgyzstan, but the fee supports sustainable tourism.

6. Oman

Oman proves that amazing places don’t always have to be cold. Sometimes, they mean golden sand dunes stretching to the horizon.

The Wahiba Sands cover 12,500 square kilometers. But Oman is more than desert… you can go from dunes to turquoise swimming holes, mountains and coastlines in one trip.

7. Nepal

Nepal is a place where nature feels incredible. Eight of the world’s 14 mountains above 8,000 meters are here, including Everest.

You don’t need to climb Everest to enjoy them. You can trek the Annapurna region, explore Pokhara, or experience the Himalayas from lower altitudes.

Is Nepal Good for Solo Travelers?

Yes. Nepal has a good trekking infrastructure. You can join guided groups or organize parts alone. The trails make meeting people easy.

Just take altitude seriously.

8. Azores, Portugal

The Azores prove you don’t need to travel to the other side of the world for surreal scenery.

On São Miguel, volcanic craters have transformed into crazy lakes surrounded by green landscapes. At Sete Cidades, you can see the famous twin lakes from viewpoints high above the caldera.

Why Visit?

  • 🌋 Volcanoes
  • 🥾 Hiking
  • ♨️ Hot springs

9. Cape Verde

When most people hear Cape Verde, they think of beaches. But Santo Antão is where things get different

The island is covered in rugged volcanic mountains, deep valleys and hiking trails connecting tiny villages. One minute it’s dry and volcanic. Then you turn a corner and find a lush green valley below you. Santo Antão was my favorite island of Cape Verde.

What Makes Santo Antão Special?

Tip: Bring good hiking shoes. I went hiking in Santo Antão with two girls I met there after a local recommended the route to us. The trail took us deep into nature, with steep sections where we had to climb, so proper hiking shoes were important. It was an amazing experience, but it was not a flip-flop kind of hike.

If you plan to do more remote or challenging hikes, make sure you also have travel insurance that covers hiking and outdoor activities.

10. Antarctica

And finally… Antarctica.

If there’s one place that made me feel like I’d left the planet, it’s Antarctica. The icebergs are big. The mountains seem endless. The silence feels different. And penguins casually walk around like they own the place. They do.

What Makes Antarctica Surreal?

  • 🧊 Giant icebergs
  • 🐧 Penguin colonies
  • 🐋 Whales
  • 🚤 Zodiac excursions
  • 🌍 Landscapes with almost no human development

Most travelers visit on expedition ships during the Antarctic summer. And yes, it’s expensive. But it’s an expedition, not a holiday.

Expedition ships are good for solo travelers. You meet people during meals, excursions and landings while still having time to yourself.

Tip: Weather changes fast… “sunny to blizzard in 20 minutes” fast. A waterproof outer layer is necessary!

My Antarctica Experience as a Solo Traveler

I almost let one canceled landing ruin my trip. Our mainland landing was postponed, Zodiac departures changed, and the weather kept making decisions. I’d traveled across the world for this moment.

But eventually, the landing happened.

And I realized: Nature decides. That was frustrating. It was also what made it special.

Mini FAQ: Solo Female Travel

Here are the most common questions about traveling solo to unique places

What are the most surreal travel destinations?

Kyrgyzstan, Antarctica, Greenland, Patagonia, Bhutan, Nepal, the Galápagos, Oman, the Azores and Cape Verde.

What is the best budget-friendly destination?

Kyrgyzstan and Nepal. Beautiful mountains without the Antarctica or Greenland price tag.

Where can I find cheap flights to these destinations?

I start with Skyscanner to compare different airlines, dates and routes. Being flexible with your travel dates make a big difference.

Where can I find group tours and activities?

GetYourGuide and Viator are useful for finding day trips, guided tours, excursions and activities. They can be especially helpful when you are travelling solo and want to join a group instead of organising everything yourself.

Where can I find affordable accommodation?

For hotels and private accommodation, Booking.com is a good place to compare options. If you are traveling solo and want to meet other travelers, check Hostelworld for hostels and social stays.

Where can I find multi-day group tours?

For longer organised trips, TourRadar is a good option for comparing multi-day group tours, including adventure and small-group trips in destinations such as Nepal, Bhutan, Argentina and more.

Is Antarctica worth the money?

Yes! It’s expensive, but it’s one of the few experiences that feels like an expedition. Find more insights about my solo trip to Antarctica on my guide.

Final Thoughts – Last Stop Before Takeoff!

The world is full of places that look impossible.

You can sleep in a yurt beneath the mountains of Kyrgyzstan, hike through the Himalayas, watch icebergs drift past Greenland, or be on Antarctica surrounded by penguins.

You don’t need to visit all ten. Just pick the one that makes you think: “I need to see this with my eyes.”

The best places that feel like another world are about the moment you stop, breathe and think, “I can’t believe I’m here.”

Adventure on, I’ll see you on the road!
