Planning feels overwhelming… cruises, flights, insurance, gear, and tips. 100 things you didn’t realize you needed. But once you understand the main costs, it gets easier.
For most travelers, a realistic total budget is €6,000–€12,000 (~$7,000–$13,900) per person. That’s a lot, but choosing a simpler cabin, comparing expeditions, and being flexible saves thousands.
Your expedition cruise is the biggest expense, but don’t forget flights, accommodation, insurance, and extras.

Breaking Down the Budget
🚢 Cruise Cost
It was my first cruise, and I was shocked how fast costs added up. Prices vary by ship, cabin, itinerary, and what’s included.
When planning expensive adventures, I don’t ask, “What’s the cheapest price?” I ask, “What’s the cheapest price that still gives me a safe, enjoyable trip?”
Ask yourself: Do I really need a fancy cabin? You’ll be outside watching penguins, riding Zodiacs, and photographing icebergs… not watching TV.
Save on your cruise:
- 🛏️ Choose a basic cabin – No balcony? No problem.
- 👯 Share a cabin – Cheaper than paying a single supplement. I shared it with a funny woman from New Zealand.
- 🔎 Compare ships & departures – Prices vary wildly.
Tip: Save on luxury. Spend on the experience.
Flight Cost
Getting to Antarctica means getting to South America first. For most expeditions, Ushuaia, Argentina, is the gateway.
Save on flights:
- ✈️ Check different airports
- 🔎 Compare dates (even 1–2 days changes prices)
- 🧳 Watch baggage costs
- 🗓️ Leave a buffer – Don’t arrive hours before your ship leaves!
Tip: Flights to Ushuaia can be one of the bigger parts of your Antarctica budget. I recommend comparing different dates and departure airports on Skyscanner before booking.
Why Arrive in Ushuaia Early?
Don’t save money here. Arriving the same day your expedition leaves is a huge risk. Imagine saving €50 (~$57) on a hotel but missing the expensive cruise because your flight was delayed.Give yourself at least one day’s buffer. It’s worth every euro/dollar.
Tip: Why not make the most of your time in Argentina? I arrived in Ushuaia 2.5 weeks before my Antarctica expedition and traveled around Argentina before heading to Antarctica. I loved it! If you have the time, I’d recommend turning your Antarctica trip into a bigger Argentina adventure. You can find tours and activities in Ushuaia on GetYourGuide or Viator.
Accommodation Cost
You’ll need a place in Ushuaia before and after your cruise. You don’t need anything fancy.
Save on accommodation:

After flying halfway around the world, you need a bed, preferably one that doesn’t move like a ship.

How to Save for Antarctica
Freaking out about the price? Turn it into a goal!
Let’s calculate together.
Target: €7,000 (~$8,100). Sounds crazy, right? But over two years: €7,000 ÷ 24 months = €292 (~$340) per month.
Now that’s workable. Save €200/(~$340) month, take freelance work, reduce expenses, use travel rewards, sell stuff you don’t need.
You won’t magically find €7,000 (≈$8,100) but you can create a plan. (Or manifest it. 😉)
A “cheap” Antarctica trip won’t be €1,000 (~$1,160). But combine smaller savings: €500 ($580) on the cruise, €200 ($230) on flights, €200 ($230) on accommodation, and €300 ($350) on extras = €1,200 ($1,390) saved. You’re welcome.
1. Be Flexible With Dates
Instead of “I must go December 14th,” give yourself options.

Some travelers go to Ushuaia and score empty-cabin deals. But you need extreme flexibility! You could wait days or find nothing. Risky if you have limited vacation time.

5. Don't Buy an Entire Wardrobe

Once onboard, you’ll see kayaking, camping, paddling… and your budget will cry. You don’t have to do everything. Choose what excites you most. For me, camping was non-negotiable. Expensive, but sleeping overnight in Antarctica meant more to me than kayaking. No regrets, even though I barely slept because it was so cold!
